June Birthdays

Here I am once again, late for the birthday post.  In my defense, there are several mitigating factors.  For one, I am just 3 weeks or so post carpal tunnel surgery on my dominate hand, and I still do not have full use of that hand.  Couple that with the decision we made to try and paint the outside of the house over the Memorial Day weekend and well... let's just say that I am a week behind on that project.  There was a lot more repair work than we anticipated, and my hand just isn’t up to the task.  So maybe this weekend we'll get it finished.  In any case, I am again dictating this post and then copying and pasting.  It's almost as frustrating as the painting.

Luckily I didn't miss anyone's birthday.

I'm going to start with wifey's family this month simply because she has more ancestors with birthdays this month than I.  But first an interesting family history tidbit.  Both wifey and my fathers had two marriages.  Both of those marriages tragically ended with the death of their wives.  My dad's first marriage lasted not quite six years.  Wifey's dad's only three months.  And it's with that first wife we start.

Sarah Charlotte Vihlen, 7 June 1929 - 31 July 1950.  Barely a month past her 21st birthday when she died due to a cerebral hemorrhage.

We that do family histories know how much the universe loves to mess with us mere humans.  Just look at me and wifey, we have only two children both boys.  So, do we have any grandsons?  Nope, just two wonderful granddaughters.  In a similar manner, wifey's parents were born just one calendar day apart.  Several years apart, but only one day on the calendar.  Her mother, Cornelia Opha Greene, 12 June 1933, and her father Charles Nathan Moore, Sr., 13 June 1925.

That means that "dear ol' dad's" two wives had birthdays only five days apart, and his was just one more day more.  So very much like my Campbell March birthdays

The last one on wifey's side is a paternal 2x great grandmother, Celia Elizabeth Hutson, 18 June 1835.

On my known list I have only two ancestors this month.  My maternal grandmother Dora Calder, 8 June 1898.  She married Talmadge Whitaker Hicks.  Then a paternal 3x great grandfather James Robert Hancock, 11 June 1802.  At 219 years young Mr. Hancock is the oldest on the known lists.

I do have some vague memories of Grandma Hicks.  Almost every summer during my childhood we would drive up to South Carolina to see her, or my mom’s brothers and sisters after she passed in 1972.  My eldest sister and I had her two kids, my niece and nephew, at the drive-in movie (who remembers those?) watching Lady and the Tramp when mom got the call that her mother had passed.

Likewise, on my "probable" lists, I only have two names.  Both are 4x great grandfathers on my dad's side.  First is Libni Taylor, 10 June 1770.  Lastly is John Campbell, 11 June 1768.  Mr. Campbell is the best lead I have in my direct paternal line.  But I would not put the chance he is the correct person much above 15%.  I have mentioned before, that trying to find my Campbell line is nothing short of exasperating.  I have had almost every DNA test, and I am not any farther along than I was 5 years ago.  Mr. Campbell would have turned 253 today, that would make him the oldest member on this list.

Peace,
B
